Which license do I have, and how is it served?

Two independent questions: what type of license it is, and how it's served to your machine. Run Help → Licensing (or und license) to see your current status.

License types

Type shown Meaning
Commercial License A paid license (may show – Perpetual).
Trial License / Timed Trial Time-limited evaluation.
Non-Commercial For non-commercial use.
Educational For qualifying educational institutions. See Apply for an educational license.
Corporate A corporate-wide license (shown separately from the normal per-seat info).
Open Source Automatic free grant for projects in a public git repository. See Use Understand free for open-source projects.

Note

These are the type names Understand reports; a perpetual license appends – Perpetual (e.g. "Commercial License – Perpetual"), and a corporate license shows as its own Using Corporate License line rather than as a type name. (There is no separate "FOSS" license type — non-commercial use falls under Non-Commercial.)

How the license is served

Mechanism What it means How to point at it
Cloud (default) Licenses served by SciTools' cloud server, licensing.scitools.com. Default; no action.
On-premises server Your organization hosts its own Icarus license server. Set the server with und -setlicenseserver <host>, or the UNDERSTAND_LICENSE_SERVER environment variable.
Offline No network at all; codes exchanged via scitools.com/offline. See Check out an offline license.
Node-lock License bound to one specific machine. und -createnodelockrequestcode → redeem → und -setnodelockreplycode <code>. See node-lock codes.

Concurrent/floating seats are served by the cloud or on-prem server and are freed when you close Understand or return the seat — see Manage a team — seats and usage. All the license-related und switches are in the und licensing reference.

Redeeming a claim code

A claim code is not a license code — redeem it at licensing.scitools.com to get your license, then enter that in Help → Licensing. Step-by-step: Redeem a claim code & enter your license.
